Charles Cao Headshot

Charles Cao
Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Virginia Tech

Dr. Charles Cao was recruited from the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter – Caltech (IQIM) where he was a postdoctoral associate. Previously, he was a QuICS Hartree Postdoctoral Fellow in quantum information and computer science from 2019 to 2022 at the Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS) at the University of Maryland. His research spans high energy physics, quantum information theory, and gravity. He is particularly interested in emergent phenomena in complex manybody systems. His current research focuses on an approach to quantum gravity where space-time and Einstein gravity can emerge from quantum manybody systems. He has worked on problems in holography, cosmology, foundations of quantum mechanics, quantum information, and tensor networks. Charles received his doctorate from California Institute of Technology in 2018.
