Gretchen Matthews

Southwest Virginia Node Director

Gretchen Matthews is a professor of mathematics at Virginia Tech. Her research is in applications of algebraic geometry to data storage, protection, and security, especially coding theory and cryptography. She studies desirable properties for reliable and secure communications as well as distributed storage systems. Her research has been sponsored by government agencies including NSF and NSA for more than twenty years.

Matthews received her B.S. in mathematics from Oklahoma State University in 1995 and her Ph.D. in mathematics from Louisiana State University in 1999. She is completing her M.B.A. in Fall 2022.
