Dr. Gurkan Akalin is a distinguished academic and industry professional specializing in business analytics. Since August 2023, he has been serving as the Chair of the Department of Business and Economics at the University of Virginia's College at Wise (UVA Wise). In this role, he also holds the position of Executive Director of the Institute for Applied Data Analytics and is a Professor of Business Analytics.

At UVA Wise, Dr. Akalin is instrumental in developing the college's data analytics curriculum and establishing the new master’s degree in technology management and data Analytics. He is also leading the implementation of a new online business administration major and leading the development of a hospitality and tourism program within the Department of Business and Economics. His efforts aim to enhance educational opportunities and support economic development in the Southwest Virginia region.

Dr. Akalin's research interests encompass business analytics, managing uncertainty and risks, digital technology utilization, and supply chain management. His work seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical application, providing valuable insights for both academia and industry.  In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Akalin brings substantial industry experience to his teaching and research. This blend of academic and practical experience enriches his contributions to the field of business analytics.
